The first Skyline GT-R went on sale in 1969 and was originally available only as a four-door sedan with a 2 litre engine. A coupe version was introduced in 1971. In 1989 a new all-wheel-drive GT-R with a 2.6 litre turbocharged engine was launched which sold extremely well with over 43,000 produced. This was followed in 1995 by the R33 and in 1999 by the R34. In 2007 Nissan revealed the production version of the latest generation GT-R in Japan, but it did not appear on the US market until 2008 with its European debut in 2009.
