First produced in 1966, the Cougar soon proved to be a rousing success. However, sales started to drop in the early seventies and Mercury's response was to replace muscle with fluff by adding tonnage and packing to the high-profit options. It worked, but only for a short period and Mercury never regained the muscle car image.
