MG TA & TC Gold Portfolio 1936-1949 £16.95

Rationalisation of makers model ranges produces dud cars more often that it results in good ones, but the T-type MGs were the exception to this general rule. After the Morris Motors takeover of MG in 1935, the company's new owners decided to make some sort of sense out of the disparate collection of models which then bore the MG name. The original overhead-cam Midgets were swept aside, to be replaced by the TA, which arrived on the scene in 1936. The purists and traditionalists moaned, as they always do, but the TA went on to sell just over 3,000 copies before it was replaced in 1939 by the TB. This visually similar car had the benefit of a new and more powerful engine which gave it a very different character and was easier to tune, but the Second World War intervened and only 379 examples were made before production was halted. MG were quick off the mark when the War ended, getting a revised version of the TB into production as early as 1946. This new model, already an anachronism in many ways, nevertheless recaptured some of the joys of pre-War motoring for a car-starved world. Obliged to export to meet Government requirements, MG did extraordinarily well with the TC in the USA, despite the fact that all cars were built with right-hand drive! By the time the TC gave way to the much more modern TD in 1949 (again to a chorus of moans from traditionalists), 10,000 examples had been built. Today, the early T-Series MGs are established classics with a strong following. The articles reproduced here help to explain their appeal, and also provide a fascinating dose of nostalgia for those who remember the cars when they were to be seen in everyday use on the roads. This is a book of contemporary road & comparison tests, new model intros, specification data, technical articles, trials, touring, tuning, DIY advice & history. Models covered: TA, TA Tickford, TB, TB Tickford, TC & Park Ward. 172 pages, 450 illus. SB. SKU: MGC36GP ISBN: 9781855203150
