The car which Chevrolet introduced in 1962 to compete with the compact Ford Falcon was initially marketed as the thrift car. Early Chevy IIs came with weak four-cylinder engines or an optional overhead valve six, and it was not until 1964 that true muscle entered the picture in the shape of a small block V8. So sure were Chevrolet that the public would take to it that they offered a V8 conversion kit for earlier models through their dealers. After that, there was no holding the baby Chevrolet. The Nova models had always been the image-cars of the line, and the Nova SS, fitted with a variety of V8s including the legendary L-79, held the line's reputation high through the Muscle era and into the 1970s. And then, emission control regulations struck. Like their bigger sisters, the Novas lost power until even the 350V8 was putting out no more than 185bhp for 1973. For 1975, Chevrolet needed to reskin the whole line to keep sales from falling. Compact, practical, and none too expensive today (except in their most exotic high performance forms), these Chevrolets make enjoyable cars for the enthusiast. Thanks to better than average corrosion protection right from the beginning, they also last better than many of their contemporaries.
