With the second generation of E32 7 Series cars introduced in 1986, BMW made what was perhaps its most powerful statement yet. If the first generation, or E23, models had taken some time to shake off early unreliability problems and become established, there were to be no mistakes this time. The E32 models challenged Mercedes-Benz for dominance of the large, luxury car market in Europe and the USA, and quickly became the benchmark models in their class. Partly their success was the result of high standards of build quality; partly it resulted from advanced technology; and partly it depended on BMW's brilliant fusion of first-rate handling with luxury car levels of comfort and refinement. But, as always with the Bavarian manufacturers cars, a big factor in the E32s appeal was their engines. There were the silky smooth, big sixes for which BMW was famous, plus a massively impressive V12 for the top-of-the-range models. And, later on, the 7 series pioneered BMW’s new light alloy V8s. Even now, a decade and a half after their introduction, it is impossible to drive one of these cars and not come away impressed. A well kept example will prove a real joy but it is worth remembering that the cars were never cheap and proper maintenance will never be cheap either. So as the neglected and rough examples gradually disappear from our roads, those who have managed to hang on to good ones can congratulate themselves that they have picked up a real milestone car. Including road & comparison tests, new model intros, driver's reports & long term reports. Models covered: 730i, 735i, V8, 730i, 740i, V12, 750i, 750iL, E32, Alpina B11 & B12. 136 pages, 350 illus.
